It's Teresa Kelleher here again...Hi Claudio, <br /> It's Teresa Kelleher here again. I just read your article of 6/28/09 about bilingual education. You absolutely hit the nail on the head with some of the issues facing programs for English Language Learners (ELLs). Here in Arizona, for example, we have laws requiring programs that offer four hours of English instruction daily for ELLs. Unfortunately, the mandates are not funded. This causes small districts like the one in which I teach English to ELLs to do the best we can with the resources we have. Small districts often fall short. Yes, immigration issues also come into play as well. <br /> I would absolutely love to see more bilingual programs. My niece's children in Portland, OR attend a bilingual school and they are completely bilingual and functioning academically very well in both languages. Again, small districts do not have the staff or resources to offer such programs.<br /> Thanks for the interesting article.
